If we consider space as a social construct, defining the concept of a family-oriented city or family-friendly spaces initially requires defining the concept of family. The concept of family in Iran has changed over the past few decades due to various economic, social, and political factors such as the networking of society, commodification, feminization, urbanization, and modernization. Consequently, it has transformed from extended patriarchal families to more individualistic and civil families. Therefore, the definition of suitable family spaces should be based on understanding these transformations and avoiding nostalgic and ideological perspectives on the concept of family.

اگر فضا را یک تولید اجتماعی در نظر بگیریم، تعریف مفهوم شهر خانواده‌‌مدار یا فضاهای دوستدار خانواده در ابتدا نیازمند تعریف مفهوم خانواده است. مفهوم خانواده در ایران در طول چند دهۀ اخیر به دلیل عوامل مختلف اقتصادی، اجتماعی و سیاسی نظیر شبکه‌ای شدن جامعه، کالایی شدن، زنانه شدن، شهری شدن و مدرن شدن تغییر یافته و از خانواده‌های گستردۀ پدرسالار به خانواده‌های اتمی مدنی‌تر تبدیل شده است؛ بنابراین تعریف فضاهای مناسب خانواده نیز باید براساس درک این تحولات و پرهیز از نگاه‌های نوستالژیک و ایدئولوژیک به مفهوم خانواده صورت بگیرد.
